Hello,
I have been testing the last version of Breakaway and are looking for a particular sound, sound is better than word then :
<>
I know there’s Omnia behind that sound, so I think I should take the right plugin in order to get that type of bass (Impact/Clunk, BASS-EFX ?).
I don’t know if Plutonium is the appropriate preset for having this sound and don’t know either how to configure the settings and also the stereo enhancer Challenger in order to have this kind of stereo (very-wide but under control imo.)
So, if you can give me some tips or maybe the settings you think that fits the sound of the station.
Thank you. 🙂
August 15, 2009 at 6:09 am #8034JesseGMemberHonestly, this sounds like a Vorsis AP1000/2000. And imho it sounds like crap. You can make a better sound than this. 8)
Uhgg, had to stop when the Lady Gaga came on. How can people listen to that sh**?
August 15, 2009 at 10:49 am #8035LeifKeymasterHoly crap, I just heard it.
Slmoo, since you don’t hear how bad that sounds, I urge you to look at the signal with Breakaway’s oscilloscope (with Breakaway) in bypass.
Notice how the oscilloscope is constant eight and density, without ever being dense at the edges? That’s bad. It means they’re pushing a look-ahead limiter WAY too hard. This causes extreme amounts of intermodulation distortion. Untrained ears may not be aware of this type of distortion, but it causes listener fatigue and tune-out just the same. People would tune out without ever knowing why.
You can also clearly see the flattened edges (on the kick drums for example) from todays music being all bent out of shape, because of their processor not being phase linear. In my opinion, a station trying to be loud while playing top40 today absolutely must have phase linear processing, or the result will be an unlistenable mess.
Here’s a station to compare to: http://87.98.219.221:8210
This stream (BestRadio) is run by a couple of young guys in Belgium and France, and they’re using Breakaway Broadcast. The format is similar to the stream you sent (essentially north american top40).It’s actually louder on some songs (and check out the punch of those drums!!) and the processor isn’t even breaking a sweat.
Do I have a suggestion?
Sure. Try BBP with Plutonium and 15us pre-emph + de-emph. If that’s not loud enough, turn the bass down a bit (there’s not much bass in the stream you sent, so if you lower the heavy bass in plutonium you can get a lot of loudness for free). Then, turn speed up, maybe to 60 or 70 if you like it dense. Finally, you could turn Clip Drive up, but i would NOT go higher than +1.5! It’s not worth it. People have volume controls.
Best,

You can listen the sound here : http://87.98.155.158:80/ (copy and paste to your player)
Using Breakaway with Bass-EFX+Clunk/Impact+Soft Pre-Processing with another processor. French sound, so I’m using French Kiss (so it may pump more since I’m using _trash things_ before 😛 ).
Don’t hesitate to say something about it, I’m far from perfect as you can see (and as I can hear.)
Thank you. =)

November 26, 2009 at 10:06 pm #8039AnonymousGuesthigh life, would you be able to tell me how i could get a sound like either of these stations? http://streamer2.ipartyradio.com:7200/
http://194.158.114.66:5000 thanksNovember 30, 2009 at 10:13 pm #8040xinetdMemberWhich preset has not intentionally "pumping" (like France Kiss)?
Thanks.
November 30, 2009 at 11:57 pm #8041LeifKeymasterXinetd, the presets that have lots of intentional pumping are:
Eruption, French Kiss, Jill FM
These presets have some intentional pumping:
New York, CHR
All other presets are tuned to pump as little as possible.
You can tell quite easily by looking at the available meters. The AGC meter has up to three sections, because apart from the standard Input AGC, there’s also two wideband compressors that some presets use in different ways. If you see an orange meter below the yellow meter, pumping up and down with the kick drum, that’s pumping, and absolutely intentionally created by the preset designer.
We know it’s intentional since if it wasn’t, it’s be very easy to avoid pumping with Breakaway. Some people feel it doesn’t sound "loud" without pumping — these presets were created for them. 🙂

also the Rusticity presets, which are highly influenced by the sound of the best of 70s era processing (one for early 70s density/speed and one for just pre-8100 density/speed). But they aren’t included anymore due to low voting. (the only other preset besides Rustonium with always flawless midrange imho is CGSmooth, but it has a more modern sound)
The way that the pumping is done in those is not easy to tell that it’s pumping. In fact the research for the methods used in it to "abuse" the two widebands was used extensively in the tuning of Rustonium, which I still feel is my most perfect "processed-sounding" preset, and I’ve decided to stop trying to make presets that sound awesome and flat all the time. My next presets will have decided amounts of "theme-based" or "genre-based" coloring.
With one exception, I’m still planning to do a talk radio preset that blows away the 9100.
December 2, 2009 at 10:26 pm #8043JesseGMemberp.s. Revolution AM 1 Sample.mp3 NTSC AM Mono 150% positive modulation, just an unrefined taste of what Breakaway can do with an AM-specific talk preset, and yes this would be LOUD on air
December 3, 2009 at 9:39 pm #8044xinetdMemberHi Leif and Jesse,
thanks for the answer, for my ideal sound I’m looking a right compromise between clean and loudness without excessive "pumping".
I’m in love for 8100 sound, clean in music and speech and inconfondible bass!
I have a recorded clip from Italian adult contemporary station using this settings.I like so much Rustonium preset it’s sounding very good, actually I’m using this one with my setting.
Any opinions and suggestions are been welcome. 😉
Bye!
