Leif,
In the BBP AGC meter sometimes I see a section at the head of the meter which is a combination of yellow and a slight reddish colour. This is separated from the rest of the yellow bars by a single bar of the meter which seems to "ride" back to the head of the meter as if it is displaying an average of the AGC. I mainly see it when there is a dramatic change of level in the audio, from low to high levels.
Does that description makes sense to you? I was just wondering that that indication was?
I had to send some audio interstate today so to amuse myself I fed the studio through BBP and then off to the fibre. 🙂 The guy at the other end must have been so busy enjoying it by blasting it through his studio speakers whle I was sending it that it took quite a few yells into the intercom to get his attention so I could tell him I’d need to stop and resend it unprocessed. He wanted me to let it run so he had a processed version for himself. 🙂

(Too much time on his hands)March 11, 2009 at 6:19 pm #6835LeifKeymasterYou are very observant, Scotty! 🙂
First in the Breakaway chain is a very gentle, slow-attacking wideband agc. After that is a much faster wideband agc, which is there to pick up the slack during surprises, so that they can be handled without the listener perceiving pumping or ducking. Certain presets use a third wideband agc, either before or after the multiband, to induce intentional, controlled pumping.
All three AGCs are displayed in the single AGC bar, with the bars being different colours. The very bottom of the stack shows the combined gain of all three agcs, but with the different colours you can see exactly what each is doing at every stage.
Nice about the studio feed! Send him a link to BBP, sounds like a future customer to me 😉.
You are very observant, Scotty! 🙂
Thank you. It caught my eyes when I was running the output of the desk through it and checking some segues on some of the music and voice tracks. I had a song followed by an Artist Grab and ID for the following song and I moved the segue for later so the song would fade more and then the Artist Grab and ID would come in harder as it was releasing gain. That was the first time I noticed it I usually use my ears more than my eyes. 🙂
Thanks for the explanation of how it worked. As I have spend recent days reading a lot of Cornelius’s writings about Audio Processing for Broadcast (and DAB) what you wrote actually makes sense to me.

Just another question .. Today I was showing Breakaway Live to the guys down in one of the recording studios and we put some things through it. One of them asked me about the Meter on the Output reading up to +18 (or +20). Does it conform to a (K-System) K20 scale ? K20 sets the standard 83dB monitor level at 0dBr, That’s -20dBFS.
Thanks for all your assistance. You knowledge sharing is appreciated.

March 12, 2009 at 11:01 am #6837JesseGMemberBreakaway Broadcast has an output meter like that, Live does not.
In BBP what that’s showing is how far into the clipper the output of the final limiters is going. If studio guys confused 20db of clipping for K-System’s K-20, then BY GOLLY it’s a good clipper eh? 😉
But yeah, I’m a huge fan of K-System, use it every day, my entire system is calibrated for K-20 and K-14, through and through. 8)
March 12, 2009 at 11:34 am #6838LeifKeymasterScotty, I’m afraid not — it’s a bug. Forgot to change the scale when turning BBP into Live. (Gotta start from somewhere, right?)
I’ll fix it for the next version.

March 12, 2009 at 11:53 pm #6839JesseGMemberAh, you’re right. My bad @ Live. What I said about Breakaway Broadcast was true, just never noticed that the meter was like that on Live.
Just goes to show how much I actually use the release flavors of Breakaway. 😉 My main use for Breakaway Live is to make myself sound like God on Skype. Lol, seriously. It *does* sounds great too.
^ for voice ONLY btw 😉

When Breakaway Live came out first, it was darn perfect for a first beta! 8)
Not bad going at all when you consider the differences that exist between Breakaway Broadcast and Breakaway Live! 😀Best regards,
Ah, you’re right. My bad @ Live.
No problem.

I tried a few runs with your Rusticity presets and the top end goes a bit crazy in Rusticity ’83, smoother in Rusticity ’73. I still like ’83 on that era’s music. Well done.
Leif,
