First off, Leif, I love this program and as soon as my wife approves it, I will be purchasing this! (hope that happens before the 30 day trial expires) I would like to hear from others what their favorite presets are and what settings are the best for them. I have chatted with Jesse (thanks!) on occasion who would guide me to some ideas on what I’m looking for.
For me, I seem to float between Heavy NR and Zenith. I have the range up to 100% and power at about 60% and speed at 50%. Sometimes on those quiet song intros, the sound is boosted up to fill the space and they sound louder than when the rest of the instruments kick in. I know that’s just perception, but it’s a bit icky sounding. Do I lower range for this?
I listen mostly to modern American Country music. There’s a lot of types of music within the genre. So listening to songs back to back really shows the power of BAE.
I also stream my music via edCast with AAC+ 48kbps. I listen to it at work. I have it public and listed at shoutcast, but rarely have any listeners so it’s basically my personal radio station. I use ZaraRadio for automation. You can check things out at http://kxrt.wordpress.com
So share with us your fave settings/presets!

Thank you for your comments! 🙂
Indeed, setting range at 100% is asking it to boost quiet parts too much 🙂. Try leaving range at 50, and perhaps turn power down instead of up.
Personally, if listening by myself, I run Reference Settings with big speaker systems and Reference Heavy with smaller speaker systems. I tend to leave the controls all at 50, although I may boost bass for taste. 🙂
Best,

I remember playing around with SoundSolution and you could max out the AGC Max Gain but limit the gate so it will only reach so far to gain up a soft portion of the song. Jesse mentioned gating is involved but it is intelligent and basically runs itself. My guess is it’s among the controls adjusted along with the Range setting.
Thanks again for the response and the incredible product!

Gating is actually one of the simpler things in Breakaway — two thresholds, when the input level drops below the first threshold, release of all compressors (including the wideband agc) slow down by a factor of 3. When the input level drops below the second threshold, release completely halts.
The gating levels are actually fixed per preset, and are not affected by the range setting.
The big gotcha is — if you’re using gating to prevent the compressors from gaining too much, why set range that high in the first place? The whole point of range is to put a limit on how much gain can be applied by the compressors. Gating is unpredictable — sudden silence on the input will freeze the compressors where they are, whereas a slow fadeout will allow the compressors to keep gaining (until they hit the range limit, and stop gaining further). On the other hand, Range is completely predictable — it will never gain more than that, period. You can even see it on the meters — the gain scale moves with the range control, and at the very point the meter disappears, that’s it — there’s no further gain available to apply.
