Hi Leif!
I’m just being nosy – and apologies in advance if this is too personal – but I’ve been dying to know whether you’re a plain-Jane ipod kind of guy, or have you hacked Breakaway into your mp3 player and’re living the dream? ๐Thanks again for music that’s just better!
December 12, 2008 at 8:48 am #4613AnonymousGuestI guess this has been on my mind so much lately, as I haven’t been able to listen to music on my ipod for some time now…
I only have audiobooks on it, as music just sounds so flat after having gotten used to breakaway…If anyone has any helpful suggestions, they’d be very welcome indeed.
December 12, 2008 at 3:05 pm #4614LeifKeymasterGreat question ๐.
When I need to take music on the road, I tend to pre-process MP3s through my algorithm and either write an MP3 CD (*very* oldschool – played on a discman) or load them onto a memory stick to play in my ol’ trusty Sony Ericsson W810.
I tend to favour the sony discman because of it’s incredible playing time on a single AA battery, and no trouble from flight attendants, even though it’s more than a little bulky for 2008. I listen through Etymotic Research ER-4P in-ear phones when I’m on the road, but I usually also bring my Sennheiser HD 650 reference cans with me on trips — I just never know when I’ll need them. I bought them years ago, and to me they were worth every penny.
I have actually never bothered buying an ipod or other dedicated mp3 player, specifically because of the lack of processing. What’s the point of a 20gb hard drive if I have to pre-process every file at 10x speed? It would take forever to fill it. An MP3 CD on the other hand is managable fill with my current favourite albums before a trip.
I’m not a hardware guy, so hacking it in is basically out of the question, even if it would have been nice to have. I can’t wait for the day when I can go and buy a player with breakaway built in.. Still waiting for the day ๐.

December 12, 2008 at 10:04 pm #4615AnonymousGuestIt’s audio voodoo. We’re all waiting for that day when basic consumer devices are able to do this kind of magic.
December 15, 2008 at 1:46 am #4616AnonymousGuestWow, did not see that coming Leif!
๐
Thanks a bunch!
Now, seeing as I’m what’s lovingly referred to as a newbie, if I want to pre-process my mp3s, should I be referring to the "How can I record Breakaway’s output without using 2 computers" thread?
Does pre-process mean re-record with something like total recorder? Thanks again for the help, it’s very, very appreciated!
December 20, 2008 at 4:10 am #4617JesseGMemberLeif has something coming down the pike which… I dare not leak any info about yet, but I will say that you guys will have to have it. ๐
And Leif is being overly modest about his hardware skills. He actually did port Octimax over to a SHARC board, I have video of it somewhere. ๐ Sadly enough, most cellphones and especially music players just don’t have enough DSP power to handle that, much less a port of Breakaway.
…Yet. 8)
December 25, 2008 at 3:33 am #4618AnonymousGuestWhile I respect your loyalty and ability in keeping a secret Jesse… the amount of suspense and curiosity that you’ve just sparked makes it hard for me to see you as anything less than an evil human being ๐
I guess this won’t work; but it’s worth a try:
C’monnnn….. pleeaaassseeee????
January 7, 2009 at 11:53 pm #4619JesseGMemberThis isn’t related to what I hinted about, but… I thought it was cool to post all the same as I’ve already said it was done. I searched through my archives and found this video ๐

I told you Leif was too modest. And yes, the machine starts up THAT fast.

I guess Leif is hard headed for developing on a platform outside of PC hardware ๐ ? Isn’t a Sharc a bit of a waste for BA personal which I assume this eval board is running? I mean it seems like way more horsepower than the code requires, like using an indy car when a Prius will do.

January 8, 2009 at 1:37 am #4621LeifKeymasterIt’s indeed the sharc eval board ๐. Video was shot over 2 years ago, the port was a project for Linear Acoustic. SHARC is a nice DSP indeed.. Way easy to develop for. Interestingly, my reference x86 code is all fixed point — I actually had to *port to floating point* to make it run on the sharc ๐.

quote]This is really killing me by now ๐ could it be a standalone app to batch record/re-encode mp3ยดs with BA sound? (I’m just dreaming aloud here ), I cant wait to process some (couple thousands) songs with the french kiss preset for my car 8)
Cheers!
January 29, 2009 at 5:55 am #4623LeifKeymasterYou know, there’s so many things in the pipeline, I don’t even know which particular thing he was referring to ๐.
///Leif
February 9, 2009 at 8:03 pm #4624JesseGMemberI was referring to the thing related to when people asked about how to process tracks through Breakaway for use in portables, burning to cd, etc. I don’t know if I can talk about that yet, but really… how hard is it to figure out already, lol.
And to those who have figured it out, i’m not saying it’s going to be released at all until Leif says it is. But it’s something he wanted to do. ๐ It’s just a back-burner thing for now.
