    Recently I got a stream running for a LPFM in Pa. using Breakaway Live. The goal was to have it be very high-quality, and the ability to listen for long periods of time. Not to mention serve as a replacement for anything over-the-air.  It has quite a wide variety of music.

    mp3 256kbps -> http://199.195.194.140:8001/wkcv256.m3u
    AAC+ 24kbps -> http://199.195.194.140:8099/wkcv64.m3u

    I would have no problem using this exact same processing model for an NPR station, plus high-bitrate mp3 streaming has become very reasonably priced these days!

    Ironically the over-the-air signal is nothing more than an Aphex Compellor fed into an FM exciter. Pretty low distortion though. 'Would love to get Breakaway Broadcast going for that, but we shall see!  🙂

    Cheers.

    Even just the output of Breakaway should beat the Aphex by allowing you to get a decent amount of increased loudness on average, without overmodulating.

    The stream sounds decent.  Does your automation support loudness normalization metadata like ReplayGain?  I would consider doing loudness normalization on your library and ingest process, so that everything is -24 LKFS.

    http://r128gain.sourceforge.net/ (supports ReplayGain2, lots of options)

    I would consider something that at least crossfades at a very low level (intelligently ofc), to remove the big pauses of near silence that can sometimes happen, without simply chopping off the sound.

    Cheers 🙂

    Yeah, I wanted to setup Replaygain but the sheer number of tracks (More than 16,000) makes scanning and re-writing all the files a huge issue. The automation software is BSI Simian, and I don't think it will read ReplayGain tags. I may be incorrect. — Crossfading is something I have to look into — It was never setup to begin with. Needless to say, if I could do so, I would scale back the library to below 3000.  🙂

    Replacing the Compellor with the output of Breakaway live is something I thought about.
