So I have just started using/demoing this and I seems like a great program.
BUT I would really like to be able to adjust the volume with the wheel on my mouse, like I have done in winamp or in the windows volume controls.
I also read the FAQ and while I see how the program "takes over" all of the other volume/gain controls, it is disconcerting to be in winamp/WMP or DIVX player and not be able to control the volume directly.
It also begs the question, if I have multiple sound sources, how to I control the relative gain of each piece of software? It would also be nice to have a handle to grab the volume, while the click and hold mouse "slide" control is very nicely engineered, it is not familiar.
I have also had occasion to bring the window the front but end up scrolling the preset, not adjusting volume.I look forward to demo-ing the winamp plugin – as I think that would be where I would use it the most.
SEPP!
March 23, 2008 at 12:02 am #3911AnonymousGuestI have just now seen a possible bug where the volume does not seem to respond, but then jumps when the mouse is moved to the monitor.
I have a dual monitor setup and with the breakaway window on the left monitor, the mouse "disappears" when adjusting the volume, but when it restores, the mouse is on the lower right of the right monitor.
I thought it was a fluke, I have been able to repeat it.
Again, this could be solved with a different type of volume interface.
March 23, 2008 at 7:13 am #3912LeifKeymasterHi Spenlinhauer!
Thank you for your bug report! I’m surprised, as I developed breakaway on a dual monitor system, but indeed there’s bound to be something I overlooked.
The reason Breakaway has its special slider controls is that they allow much higher precision than the number of pixels occupied by the control, as well as being able to easily grab the slider anywhere, without a sudden volume change. However, if it’s causing problems, I can always make a setting to make it behave more like normal sliders. It already uses this mode automatically if you use it through Remote Desktop or with a Touch Screen. You’ll still be able to grab it anywhere (the entire control is the handle) but it won’t hide or move the mouse, the slider follows the mouse pixel by pixel.
Scroll-to-change-volume is not a bad idea. The only problem is that this functionality would break drop list control scrolling (which is standard behaviour in all other Windows programs except perhaps web browsers) – click on a drop list, close it again, then scroll the wheel. Also, what are the chances that you’re inside the breakaway main window when you want to change the volume? If you’re doing something else, the easiest way to change the volume is by the tray icon or explorer toolbar.
If you click on the tray icon, it already supports mouse wheel scrolling!
For mouse wheel scrolling in the explorer toolbar you would have to click on it (to focus it) anyway, at which point you may as well just hold the button down and move the mouse sideways 🙂.
Regarding multiple sources of audio — chances are they never actually play simultaneously. (If they did, you would have a one big cacophony of sounds).
For each source, when it’s actually playing, Breakaway adjusts of the incoming audio to the volume to the volume you actually want.
If we enabled the volume controls in every app (which is possible – we tried it), it actually gets confusing, because as you turn the volume down in your player, breakaway will turn the volume up (to equalize the volume as it is designed to do) until the player volume is so low (below 5% or so) that breakaway runs out of range. So, the volume control would appear to be nearly broken even if it was enabled.
So in short, I’ll make the slider mode option (to make it follow pixels), and if more people agree that it would be better to scroll volume in the main window than to scroll presets, I’ll see what I can do. Until then, I recommend the volume control popup, which already does what you want. 🙂

March 24, 2008 at 4:11 pm #3913AnonymousGuestI understand a bit more now that you explained it.
I think what would be nice is if the DEFAULT action when the breakaway window is active, is that the wheel adjusts the volume.
I have been leaving the window open, just for visual effect, yet I hate having to actually click on the volume to adjust it.And in regards to the relative volume issue, perhaps it would be better to say, that in the past it has been intuitive to go to the music playing program to adjust the volume rather than a third party control.
So again, if I am watching a movie, I adjust the volume in that program. Or in winamp, in that program. The mouse has to travel a long way from the far left screen to the volume control down far right – especially when I am already playing around with my music within winamp.Maybe an idea is to make a small volume module that "floats" on or next to an active program, so that you don’t have to travel as far.
I have also noticed one other bug type issue. When On the forum, I adjusted the volume and then clicked back to firefox, however the wheel would not scroll the page – at least not right away?
I will watch this some more and see if it affects other programs.SEPP!
