    Hello,

I’m planning on purchasing an Osilloscope for measuring and calibration of BBP output and soundcard calibration.

Please can you tell me what specifications the Osilloscope would need to measure waveforms associated with BBP and FM broadcasting?

I’ve got an electrical/electronics background but until now i’ve managed without purchasing an Osilloscope.

I’d appreciate any advice you all can give me.

    Thanks Very Much.

I have a couple of Geman made HAMEG 205-3 Oscilloscopes 😉

Great for Audio, BBP and FM broadcasting?

The reason I have two is one is one is permanently at the transmitter site the other in the Studio/workshop 😛

I use an ancient 10Mhz Phillips scope. Works perfectly.

Doesn’t matter how old it is 😮

As long as it’s is DC coupled and at least 10mHz it will be fine for audio 😉

Thanks very much for all your replies, i’ve now got a tektronix 340, just waiting for new probes to arrive.

    Thankyou all very much.

Just recieved new probes for the tds340 and have calibrated audio output, does this look ok to you guys?

I get forget to ask is there anyway that i can measure modulation output without a spectrum analyser??

    Could i use MPX tool?

PICT1332.JPG looks like aliasing. That can’t be right though since it’s at full scale. Gosh I would hope not. 😛

    For measuring modulation… http://www.MpxTool.com/ 8)

    Thanks for the headsup JesseG.

How would i go about correcting the aliasing problem? Is it very serious and does it affect audio? Is aliasing a hardware problem or something to do with the picture uploaded?

Regarding the use of MPX tool what would be the best way to correctly calibrate the modulation? I don’t have a spectrum analyser as metioned in my previous postings.

Could i use another computer to measure modulation using the line input? If ok to calibrate that way what level would i need to set the line input to?

Wouldn’t i get an inaccurate modulation reading?

I appreciate the help and advice.

That quicksweep does not look good, it looks as if there might be some filtering on the output of the dac. Some soundcards do exhibit this and are not really suitable.
Your fastsweep should look like this:

If you do a slow sweep, the scope should be filled to the same level thru the whole sweep like this:

If it dips or reduces then jumps up again during the sweep, there is a problem with the frequency response of the card, possibly caused by filtering on the dac. It might dip a tiny bit right at the end of the sweep, this can be ironed out with the peq adjustment but if you get 2 or 3 dips representative of the gaps in your fastsweep, then I would suggest you look for another sound card.

    Hi there Yorkie,

Thanks for your information. Would there be any way to remove the filtering on the DAC?

Could you recommend some decent soundcards?

    Thanks,

    Squonk

Marian Trace Alpha PCI is one of best option to use with BBP but if you use BBP ASIO, please use an old driver, because driver newer than 2.02 doesn’t work.

This card have DC Straight, you don’t need adjust tilt.

    Best regards!
