I was listening to typical library shuffle stuff – lots of different levels/quality

I noticed sometghing interesting – a few cuts from CDs mastered early in the mastering loudness wars with low passages seemed to get eaten up by a noice gate – I noticed it most on the Plutonium setting, but also Reference and Reference Heavy

Am I doing something wrong on my settings? Should I jam my player outputs all the way up, or compensate for some possible overloading/distortion on the inputs?

The output of your player should be at 100%, if you’re talking about an all-digital audio path. Having the input too low will do what you’re experiencing and there isn’t a way around that, other than turning off the noise reduction (multiband downward expanders). You should end up with basically the same sound quality, and same loudness, but with less gating.
