Hi,
We are switching away from Breakaway Broadcast to Breakaway Live for our streams and have stubbled upon a very odd problem, for the exact same input levels, exact same source and similar preset settings we were using with BBP the Bass in Breakaway is way too powerful!
I have tried all all I could think off in trying to reduce the amount of bass (all combinations of Bass Boost/Cut & Bass Shape and various plug-ins, etc.) but had no success, the bass is just punching holes in our sound even at extreme(ly) low bass settings!
Am I missing something? I’d really love to get to harness this beast! 🙂 Any help would be welcome!
Thanks & Cheers,
Audio

Other places to check that BBP doesn’t have is the "Settings", the "Loudness Settings" and "Parametric Equalizer". You wanna make sure that "Loudness" is disabled, and that the "Parametric EQ" gains are all 0dB which reads "Defeat".Another place to check would be in the "Speaker Settings" to make sure the "Bass Clip" is at 0dB (aka off), and I suppose to make sure "LPF" (Low-Pass Filter) frequency is on "Defeat". But I would think you would notice massively if that low-pass was active.

August 14, 2011 at 10:07 am #12483AudioMemberI am actually in Breakaway Live using the Broadcast mode, I’m not sure I could find the Loudness or Parametric EQ controls in Breakaway Live.
I think I have made some progress in "killing" some headroom by adding some gain (though I am now flirting with clipping!). My settings are the following:
HPF: 20
Roll Off =0
Phase Linear
Noise Reduction ONPlug-ins:
dsp_gain_6dB.dll
dsp_PhaseRotator.dllThe drum kicks are still killing our sound however, not leaving any room for the more musical parts. When I dial the Bass controls down (and Bass Shape Up) I am losing any depth in voices and other instruments, while the hard hitting kicks remain. I don’t think we could go online with this as it just creates to much "fatigue".
It has been killing my ears as well 🙁 Do you have any idea what could I be doing wrong?
Cheers,
Audio
August 14, 2011 at 2:51 pm #12484timmywaParticipantAre you applying any EQ before feeding it into Breakaway? It should just be a flat and raw audio feed if it’s from external. If you’re just feeding it digitally over pipelines or livelink (whatever it’s called), it should also be fed raw and not EQ’d.
August 14, 2011 at 3:48 pm #12485AudioMemberThe signal is going straight out of the automation software into Breakaway Live (via the pipelines), there is no EQing or other process.
What I don’t get is why drums are fine (if not a bit low) going into BBP but so "loud" in Breakaway Live?

If there is a big difference at all, other than Live sounding a bit more detailed (no pre-emphasis, no low-pass required) then something is definitely wrong.Could you upload an mp3 with a few minutes of it?
Also, what preset are you using? What version of Breakaway Live are you using?
August 14, 2011 at 9:22 pm #12487kes11MemberIs all your inputs at the digital standard -10?
If so, adding Gain dB in the effects will raise your signal before it hits the processing in Breakaway LIVE and cause what I call "colorful" distortion. Mostly, your bass will be all over the place because it’s over modulating the input. Trust me when I say I’ve tried all sorts of different set ups before arriving at my current one, but now imho I have "the sound" and it mimics very well the Omnia 6s by our nearby corporate FMs. 😀
Have your tried using the attenuator plugins? They go in front of everything else in your plugs. I use the -3 db attenuator with the bass efx plugin at 4 and impact/clunk at 1 and 2 along with phase rotation. Also it’s important to make sure the "EQ headroom" is backed down far enough to prevent overload. Mine is backed down to 18.75 dBFS. Perhaps you can try these things with the "OLDIES" preset and see what you think? I will say that if you are running any other setup besides "REFERENCE HEAVY" or "HELIX" then you will have to make major adjustments. For instance, these settings are much to extreme for "PLUTONIUM" and actually distort.
Maybe these won’t help but if they do then Idc to share my settings with you because I do not care about competition because I don’t yet stream but use LIVE for my home entertainment system. I have LIVE installed on my main desktop and ENHANCER on the 2 laptops but because I am so pleased with LIVE when the new versions come out I plan to buy it for all three machines!
Good luck my friend!
August 15, 2011 at 1:52 pm #12488AudioMemberJesse, Kes11,
Thanks for the help, the version of Breakaway Live that we have running is 0.90.96b with the Rock preset on.
Kes11, I am quite intrigued by the sound you’ve come up with, what do you mean by "EQ Headroom", Peak Ref. Level?
I have been monitoring our sound using a Bose QuietComfort headset, hopefully this doesn’t mess up my perception of things.
I’ll continue working on things and see what I can do re an mp3.
Cheers,

August 15, 2011 at 7:32 pm #12489kes11MemberHi Audio! Unfortunately I’m at work right now and don’t have breakaway on this computer (only because corporate won’t allow any software installed unless they do it) and I can’t recall. When I get home I’ll screen shot my settings and stick them on here for you. Are you using the enhancer or the parametric EQ?
Also: IMHO the "Rock" preset isn’t ideal. 🙂

Here is my basic settings I use with the "Oldies" preset. If you would like the rest just let me know. I’ll stick them on here for you.Hope this helps!
btw: These settings work well IMHO with Helix and Reference Heavy.

It definitely could. There’s a lot of value to "knowing" the inaccuracies of your listening environment, but… that doesn’t overcome everything, not by a long shot.
Also: IMHO the "Rock" preset isn’t ideal. 🙂
If I were using it, I would definitely be pushing to have less range, slower speed, and a bit less drive as well. -
