When i initially attempted to install breakaway with my soundcard at 24 bit quality, the installer informed me that my format was unsupported/device busy. At this point i should have had some kind of epiphany and changed the bitrate, but nevertheless i soldiered on. Using safe mode to select my speakers i successfully heard the test tone, and completed the installer, only to get no output to breakaway but output to my speakers at the regular channel, even with the pipeline as the default device. Disabling my speakers as a device allowed breakaway to function, but this was pointless as my speakers were disabled. After going into properties in my volume mixer and turning the quality down to 48k/16, and reconfiguring breakaway, i have it working as it should. Since the installer announces "unsupported format", i am forced to assume that 16 bit is the only one supported.
Can someone confirm this? Being both a pc gamer and somewhat of an audiophile, i would like to use 24bits if possible

Breakaway Audio Enhance only inputs and outputs at 16 bits. Only at 44 or 48 kHz sample rates.

This is something I’ve been trying to get Leif to consider… 24bits and up to 192kHz for input, output, AND the core itself. AND in 5.1 for the home theater version.

Although I’m not sure if he’ll budge on the core sample rate, I think I convinced him to change the maximum input and output sample rates, since at the very least…. Windows resampling in the audio engine is much more transparent at 192kHz. 🙂

So yeah… no matter what, the new versions are going to consider this… and it will benefit the sound. I will tend to agree that 16bit may be enough for an end user CD format… but this isn’t 1982 anymore. 192kHz 24bit is the transport format of choice today… and it ought to be how Breakaway operates if the hardware supports it. 8)

    I absolutely agree.
While 16 bit quality is fine for burning cds, with a reasonable sound card and quality headphones the differences between 16 and 24 bits and even 48/192khz become readily apparent, and as you said, the newer hardware supports it. 5.1 or 7.1 support would also be nice, especially for a home theatre version. I’ll have to download that, I’ve yet to try it.
All talk of bitrates aside, this is great software. Haven’t found anything else that allows me to use the shuffle feature while playing mp3s without at some point having to adjust the volume on my speakers because of differences in mp3 quality. I wish i could use this on my ipod, its a hassle to mp3gain my entire library to avoid having my ears bleed when the song changes.
While i wouldn’t use breakaway when listening through an entire album, especially one in 320kbps or FLAC, it does exactly what i wanted it to do, give relative normalization of volume when in a playlist or using shuffle

Wait till you hear Passive Aggressor preset… 😉 It might not change your habit, but it’ll be tempting for sure.
