Hi,
I’ve been breaking my back on this problem: "How do I get a truly processed AND detailed sound?".
I’ve stubbled onto a web station that might or might not be using BBP (I know they use software for their sound processing, which could be associated with a proprietary sound card or not) that has kept me pondering. I’m impressed by their highly compressed sound, yet it manages to stay extremely clean. It also tends to be very competitive with FM broadcasts when played on large systems! Not bad for a 128k stream!
You can listen to their stream here: http://213.218.147.9:9000/
It is most surprising to watch their waveform as it remains very detailed despite the very strong compression applied to their sound. How could I achieve this? I’ve tried to increase the Speed and lower the Power on most presets…
Maybe Leif or Jesse can answer this one and let me know which preset looks the most appropriate to get started and get closer to such a detailed waveform?!
Cheers,
Audio

March 12, 2011 at 3:48 am #11973JesseGMember"Competitive with FM broadcasts" isn’t a very high goal. 😉
This sound is definitely compressed, and pumping, and punching holes like Ali. It’s not Breakaway, because there isn’t a preset that clips the bass like that… except for one I’ve been working on for a year and it isn’t out yet, and it doesn’t pump or hole punch at all.
It sounds much better on oldies because it doesn’t correctly handle recent productions. Man, you seriously don’t hear how the bass is modulating the loudness of everything else? There’s also a lot of IMD from that sometimes. I would not listen to this station for very long if I found it in the wild.
March 12, 2011 at 7:56 am #11974radio oude stijlMemberRight. I asked about the software processing because I think the sound has a bit of an Omnia signature (O3?).
March 12, 2011 at 9:38 am #11975JesseGMemberThere’s quite a bit of clipping on this, not just bass clipping, so it can’t be the Optimod 110x. Hmm yeah, it’s definitely doing multiband clipping pretty heavily (and/or easily distorted clippers) sometimes, with less than full scale output. Something Stereo Tool does. I was thinking of Stereo Tool right away yesterday too. If it is then they are linking the bands pretty heavily or just not doing much multiband AGC.
With fresh ears I realize that it’s not as much the compression or hole punching as it is the distortion that makes me want to turn this off.
Hmm, if you want a more compressed sound, have you tried Eruption preset? Or a tweaked French Kiss with the speed up maybe?

Oeh… love that one on eighties and early nineties materialMarch 12, 2011 at 11:25 am #11977JesseGMemberThey are definitely using a huge amount of high frequency exciting too. If i had to pick analog I would say Aphex driven very hard. If I had to pick software it could be a number of things. Even Stereo Tool has one right? Another thing the sound reminds me of would be pretty easy to get with BBE Harmonic Maximizer (not the same thing as their Sonic Maximizer).
March 12, 2011 at 11:44 am #11978AudioMember@ Jesse Thanks for lending an ear to this sound 🙂 . I would have to agree that their sound is heavily distorted especially on the bass side of things. I am however impressed how they managed to keep it under control. I guess I’ve grown a bit obsessed with Bass management since I heard RockRadio1 the other day and since I can’t get BassMaxx to work I’ve been trying to find other ways to emulate a deep yet controlled low end…. . I can’t wait to hear your new preset(s) and see BBP natively support VST plugins! Within BBP, and given the pumping, I too would lean towards French Kiss, though it might have too much mid range in it.
To be fair this station started with a "Dance" format and it looks like they are are simply applying the same process to all of their channels. I don’t think this works so well with rock. This sound has been working pretty well for them however, as they are now the most listened to independent webstation in France.
But to get back to the waveform… what’s the big difference with Breakaway here? Most tests I’ve attempted always lead me to "fuller" waveforms, I can’t get such a detailed waveforms. How do they do this while maintaining such high compression? Attack and release all the way up and Power down?
@ Radio Oude stijl For what it’s worth, I hear is that they are using Sound4 along with StereoMaxx. To be precise StereoMaxx is only used on their Dance channel, this stream has some kind of sofware equivalent to StereoMaxx (?).

March 12, 2011 at 12:41 pm #11979BokiMemberThey have many streams, check port 8000, what ever they use, they have it many pieces of it. I think it’s not BA and not stereotool.
BA is much better controled and stereotool just can’t make this kind of compression.March 12, 2011 at 2:46 pm #11980radio oude stijlMember
If i had to pick analog I would say Aphex driven very hard.
2020? That would explain the uncontrolled ducking of the HF part… Always hated the HF limiter in it…. 👿
I think I’ll stick to O3March 13, 2011 at 12:42 pm #11981JesseGMemberHonestly… the Omnia 3 NET is a great box for net radio. I would rather have an Omnia ONE, but the 3 NET can do some great stuff if you start with the right preset. I don’t know how to access the advanced menus on it (I’m sure Omnia would tell you if you asked) but when I did WolfFM’s setup we started from a preset Omnia gave us on PCMCIA card… and I have to say it’s still one of the best sounding setups I’ve ever done for net radio. Unfortunately WolfFM was lost in a flood and a fire all at once… I’m not sure if it’ll ever be back on the air or not.

When used right it’s can create a very transparent sound that maintains a lot of the signature of the source. It’s a shame though that many O3FMturbo’s are put on the net as is… When pushed a bit (to) hard (and everybody wants to be the loudest on the web…) the clippers in the O3 are quite destructive. That is what i’m referring to with the stream mentioned above.
