Has anyone had any experience putting an Ariane before Breakaway? Being that Breakaway has a wideband AGC
November 5, 2020 at 12:57 pm #16176MilkyKeymasterGlad you finally made it, mpx!
I don’t have any experience, but I am not a fan of stacking devices where one can do the whole job. Is there not an option in BA1 that will give you all that the Ariane provides?
November 5, 2020 at 1:46 pm #16177mpxParticipantThanks Milky,
I like the consistency that can be achieved with a multiband AGC. Can BA1 be set to multiband on the AGC?
November 5, 2020 at 5:27 pm #16178MilkyKeymasterNot as a tick box, but I meant is there a preset that suits?
I’ll ask the same question on a professional broadcaster’s forum I belong to, and I’ll pass their responses back to you.- This reply was modified 4 years ago by Milky.
November 6, 2020 at 1:59 am #16180mpxParticipantI can’t quite get the sound I want from the presets. I’d like the ability to tweak the inner settings but that option isn’t available it seems.
November 6, 2020 at 3:29 am #16181MilkyKeymasterI see that you asked about “expert mode”. That is the realm of the “Sanctum Sanctorum”, where angels fear to tread. I don’t have a magic key, nor can I tell you how to get one. One day, I may get my wings.
November 6, 2020 at 5:20 am #16182mpxParticipantI see..
It seems to be a closely guarded secret, purely for those deemed ‘the elite warriors’.
It is the one thing that diverts my attention to other worlds, where I can hone my craft with creative freedom..
I should be free to ‘mess it up’ in my own way, after all I am paying for the privilege 😀
November 6, 2020 at 6:57 am #16183mpxParticipantWith regards to the presets, none appear to be using multiband AGC, the display shows a single AGC bar. It would be good to have some spectral control both before and after the multibands, and the ability to adjust it to taste.
November 7, 2020 at 7:56 am #16184MrKloroxParticipantAgreed. However, I’m pretty sure the concept of BreakawayOne is to provide near-Omnia processing with minimal ability to make it sound bad. Meaning those extra controls you want are intentionally not included in the product. This my interpretation.
However, I’d be happy to buy an upgrade that allows extra, more advanced configuration. In the meantime, I use another software processor as a VST plugin from within BreakawayOne.
Though for a final color shaping or attenuation, I believe you would want to look for the OUTMIX entries in the preset AMX files.

November 8, 2020 at 1:24 pm #16187MilkyKeymasterThese are a couple of responses to your question on a broadcasting group’s forum.
“If you don’t trust who is at the desk or it’s feeding an STL, the Ariane could possibly be useful? It needs to be set as transparent as possible if in front of the main processor. As Paul said in breakaway iyou would need to adjust the attack and release times of the AGC bands or choose a preset that does just that. The best advice I ever had was less is more. Don’t go adding something in chain that already does what you need unless absolutely necessary.”
“to accomplish this in a “chain” of processors, one would need to defeat or slow the wb agc and multiband agc stages of ba one, and that is just not possible. So all you could do is set them both up and “enjoy” listening to them fight eachother.”
“Not with break-away, but I did use an Ariane in front of an Optimod 9100. First, I defeated the wideband in the 9100, but ended up putting it back. Found that combining the bands in an easy riding AGC after the Ariane and before the 6 band limiter just sounded better. It gave the 6 bands in the 9100 a solid base to work from.”
“I feel like you would add something like that because what you’re adding it to lacks it’s abilities. In other words, why duplicate abilities? Unless there’s a lack or a weakness, no need to augment.”
November 10, 2020 at 6:30 am #16188mpxParticipantThanks for those Milky.
I have added in an AGC via a VST and am trying out various settings to see if I can get the required sound. So far it does sound more open without the pre-AGC, but that might just be some settings need changing. One thing I have noticed though is that it’s much more punchy when you use a declipper plugin.
November 11, 2020 at 6:40 am #16192MrKloroxParticipant@Milky Do you mind sharing what forum you’re asking these questions in? I’m always looking for places to lurk and learn about audio processing. Less so in regards to the broadcasting side of the processors. Thanks!
November 11, 2020 at 1:13 pm #16194MilkyKeymasterThis is the group, “I Love Broadcast Audio Processing”. I was invited, and I’m not too sure how to get a gong, but I’ll speak to the guy who invited me to see if I can invite you in turn.
November 29, 2020 at 7:08 pm #16223MPX Web RadioParticipantYou can get Expert Mode working in BreakawayOne. of course only on Illegay ways. BaOne is meant originally to work only with Basic Mode.
