I’m sure Leif will have a comment to add, but the Virtual Soundcard (aka Breakaway Pipeline) is actually a licensed version of VAC, aka Virtual Audio Cable. 🙂 And yes, it is certainly good, if not "a masterpiece".
I doubt it’s even close to as good as Breakaway. And for reference, the "technology" they are describing was already in-use by the late 1960s. Breakaway more-so represents late 1990s dsp technology done right – something that imo nobody else has really done yet.
There is a line-in plugin that works the same as other input plugins, by routing the signal through the DSP and Output plugins… (actually there’s two, but one is very outdated and rare plugin by Nullsoft, which i have, but it’s not worth using if the following works)::
