Hi Ken!
Those PEQ settings are incorrect. See all the squigglies on the squarewave? That’s coming from the PEQ. The PEQ is intended to correct for high frequency rolloff (to make the sweep completely flat), not to boost midrange. Any kind of "for taste" eq by the PEQ will cause severe loss of peak control, as this eq is AFTER the clipper, intended for calibration only.
It seems like tilt is slightly too high, but not bad.
For the QuickSweep, adjust the trig level on your scope to trig to the peak. This way the waveform will lock in place, making it much easier to see what’s going on. That’s the only reason why I included a sharp peak in the beginning of the sweep 😉.
Best,
///LeifLeifKeymasterStuart, hopefully not all that many, but these guys are GOOD at marketing.
Do a google search for 31 band spectral processor if you want to know who I’m referring to. It’s not really spectral (as in FFT), they’re using IIR filters (non phase linear) — that’s the reason why the phase response is so completely out of whack. Of course, their marketing department spins it around to make it a GOOD thing 😉. If I had their marketing department, I’d be rich.

LeifKeymasterThank you for the vote of confidence, Giovanni! 🙂
I really hope you’ll get it to work. I do know how addictive it can be — I’ve been designing audio processors since 1996, and I haven’t been able to be without one since.
Best,
///LeifLeifKeymasterAleph, no problem 🙂. I’ve been thinking about it for quite a while.
1) Because of the transient nature of plug-ins, it’s extremely difficult to properly protect one. For this reason, I prefer to keep it a standalone program.
2) It can’t be done, for a few different reasons:
1. Breakaway doesn’t play files. It only processes audio as it’s coming through. A signalling (metadata) byte in an MP3 will not end up in the output audio. If implemented, it would have to be as an audio watermark, which is a HUGE project, and very difficult to make it inaudible and robust (=survives mp3 compression) at the same time.
2. Even if I got the detection part perfect, what happens when we detect a pre-processed file? Imagine that the file was processed with French Kiss with the bass turned up, but you’re running Reference Settings with all defaults. If we all of a sudden bypass, it would essentially be an automatic preset change — the subwoofer would blast the listener out of his/her chair. And, what about if you’re using a crossfading player?
It really can’t be done. The only way is to be absolutely disciplined, and NOT let the files go anywhere other than your portable device.. There’s just no other way, in theory OR practice.
Best,
///LeifLeifKeymasterCamclone, I wasn’t listening to your FM broadcast. I was listening to your web stream.
There’s no excuse for imposing the limitations of FM on a web stream.. Not when a separate audio processor for the web stream is $199.

LeifKeymasterHi Modman!
The benefit is that it will solve the problem of tilt, as opposed to band-aiding it by pre-compensating in software. Will there be any audible benefit though, compared to properly calibrated pre-compensation (tilt adjustment in BBP)? Probably not. I really only did the modification in the name of thoroughness.
It will not audibly benefit your recordings unless you are referring to recording MPX straight from a tuner. 🙂
You can find the guide here:

Best,
///LeifLeifKeymasterHi Aleph!
Thanks for your comments!
You know, I’m thinking about it. Wouldn’t it be nice to drop a bunch of files into a batch processing window, and have Breakaway just breeze through them way faster than realtime, outputting to a separate folder in the format you prefer, with the settings you’ve made while listening normally? Heck, it could even have command line tool support so that you could plug in any encoder you like if you were so inclined.
I’m starting to think that it’d be a real nice feature to have. I might just do it, when I have the time between all the projects currently stacked up.
Best,
///LeifLeifKeymasterMPX PEQ is generally the smallest problem of all. Rolloff means a slight loss of stereo separation, but if you don’t have an oscilloscope, that means you’re simply not that worried about squeezing 100% performance out of your system. Tilt correction alone will get you close enough. If you want to get all the way to 100%, just buy an oscilloscope — you can buy a good used one for under $100 on eBay.
The BBCAL tool only samples at 48 kHz, so it’s useless for MPX PEQ. Even if it did, you would still need a hardware Quicksweep generator, which (if even available) would probably cost thousands of dollars. Get a scope. If you’re a radio engineer, I can’t think of a good enough excuse not to already have one! 🙂

LeifKeymasterI agree that your Windows Media Stream is the loudest I’ve ever heard, but loudness isn’t everything. It sounds like something is wrong — BBP simply doesn’t sound like this, unless you intentionally crank both bass boost and clip drive way too high.
///Leif
LeifKeymasterNice!
So, how does the signal look?
Shoot a movie of the oscilloscope (when playing music) and upload?
Or, if that doesn’t work, how about some photos?

LeifKeymasterHi Giovanni!
I just tried it with your code, installing and activating on a computer without internet connection. It worked perfectly. The offline activation worked fine.
I apologize for the trouble. Indeed, if you have a blackout during the offline activation procedure, you will have to do it all again.
Many people have used the offline activation, and it seems to work for everyone else.
If it really will not work for you, there are three remaining courses of action:
A) Temporarily connect the computer to the internet, so that online activation can proceed normally
B) Install it on a different computer
C) Request a refund. We will gladly issue one if it refuses to work properly.
Again, my sincerest apologies — I cannot fix a problem without being able to reproduce it, and as far as I can tell it’s working perfectly.
Best regards,
///LeifLeifKeymasterHey Camclone, make sure to make use of the oscilloscopes built into BBP.
If you see squarewave on the input, that’s a bad, bad, bad thing.
If you see squarewave on the output, that’s not quite as bad (it’s partly by design), but if it looks like there is no breathing room, it will sound like it too, and TSL will drop like a stone.

///LeifFebruary 21, 2009 at 1:42 am in reply to: Comparing latest BreakawayFM with Stereotool software #6629LeifKeymasterIf nothing else, for thinking StereoTool is even remotely as loud and clean as BBP 😉.
Traditional Composite Clipping, in my humble opinion, is basically cheating. It’s a lot harder to create an algorithm that’s loud and clean while abstaining from using that trick. Just ask Bob!

Yes! I’m planning to make one.
I just don’t know when I’ll have the time, but it’s been in the back of my mind for a long time, and once I get a good idea I won’t be able to restrain myself from implementing it. 😉

LeifKeymasterSparky is 100% correct, as always.
Thank you — saved me the typing 😉.
Best,
