Thank you! I completely forgot to post here 🙂. Yes, it’s newer – I fixed a few installer problems in regards to Breakaway Pipeline and Vista 64.

Sam, this is a very interesting problem!

    Difficult, but interesting nonetheless.

Bit-reduced codecs aren’t designed to deal with peak-controlled processed audio.

I tried an experiment with MP2 (using the TwoLame command line encoder, version 0.3.12b).

At 256 kbps, it introduced lots of overshoots – up to 17%. This is a big problem, because dealing with that much overshoot with any clipper other than Breakaway FM itself, would cause audible distortion.

On the other hand, at 384 kbps, I only saw 3% overshoot. So, if it’s possible to increase the bitrate, and feed the encoders digitally, you may be able to run Breakaway FM into the encoder (pre-emphasized), disconnect the Aphex and plug directly into your exciters at each transmitter site.

Every preset is completely channel-discrete, so the current presets would work just as well in mono.

Otherwise, the very best solution would be to replace each dominator with a server grade pc, and run Breakaway FM at each transmitter site. You could get by with an inexpensive server PC and an inexpensive sound card, and if you used the MPX output of Breakaway FM, you’d gain stereo sound too!

Fernando, thank you very much! Man, I knew there had to be someone to like that preset 😉.

The delay, unfortunately, cannot be removed. The algorithm delay alone is over 200ms. A clipper this advanced simply needs time to process the audio — long, complicated phase linear filters add delay, and there are several such stages in Breakaway FM.

What we will recommend, is to also run a low latency version of Breakaway, and to listen to that one instead of the FM.

    Awesome, Oele!

What pre-emphasis setting are you using? For streaming I recommend 15 or 25us.

Feel free to post the URL to your stream 🙂.

    Glad to hear it. 🙂

Actually, the thing is, I’m not the support guy, I’m the developer guy. I answer questions in the forum, but I have no access to the email (and love to keep it that way). The guy in charge of support (and many other things) is Keith Edwards (the other half of ClaessonEdwards), and he’s in California.

    Hi Olli!

You should absolutely be able to have both of them installed. I test it all the time.

However, please note that in Windows XP, Breakaway Personal (not the FM version) will change the Default Sound device in Windows, when you start and stop Breakaway.

When you start Breakaway, it will set the default sound device to Breakaway Pipeline 1.
When you shut down Breakaway, it will set the default sound device to the Output sound card that is selected.

It has to do this, because otherwise, if a regular user closes Breakaway, they would have no audio at all from their computer. We try to avoid "Help!! Breakaway broke my sound card!" emails as much as we possibly can. 😉

You can disable this behaviour in Breakaway Personal by unchecking the "Manage" checkbox in the settings. This could be what was happening.

There are no new presets in the personal version yet, but I will add the Helix and Dance presets as soon as they are done (Jesse is still tweaking the Helix preset).

In the release of Breakaway AFTER this one (1.3), I am also planning a VOIP preset, and a convenient mode selector which will remember preset + all the settings you make, and allow you to switch manually. Not in this one though — we need to get 1.2 out first.

The biggest new thing in 1.2 compared to 1.0 is without a doubt the much improved Vista support, Vista 64 support (impossible before), and better sound card compatibility (directsound support).

    Hi guys!

    Holiday? I wish! 🙂

    I’ve been busier then ever.

I’ve got big news for the next version of Breakaway Personal.

Read my lips: NO MORE HARDWARE ID

Unfortunately this also means that everyone who has bought it will need a new serial number for the next version, but we figured it was a small price to pay to be rid of the hardware locking — and it’s only this once. Future upgrades will be painless. The Support Department (that is, Keith Edwards) will happily give you a new serial number. Thanks Keith — I don’t know how you do what you do 😉.

Please, try this latest release candidate version: http://www.claessonedwards.com/rc/break … .20.04.exe

If everything is OK, we will release on monday!

Also, I’ve got a brand new product. Check the next thread.

    Excellent!

    Finally. 🙂

The fix will be in Breakaway 1.2, which should hopefully be released in a few days.

We had a few licensing-related problems with 1.02, so we’ve decided to do away with the hardware-id locking once and for all. Thus, 1.02 Release Candidate went back to the drawing board, and became 1.2. 🙂

    Hi Waltrik!

Good question. I just tested with Traktor DJ Studio 3.1.3 and that version works perfectly with the pipeline.

In my version, the list of sound cards prefixes all names with "DS" to show that they’re DirectSound drivers. I don’t see this on your screenshot — I wonder what the difference is.

In your screenshot it shows that it thinks the Pipeline has 32 channels. This could be the problem — if Traktor really thinks the pipeline has 32 channels, and tries to allocate internal buffers to handle this many challenge, maybe something goes terribly wrong.

Can you try a different version of Traktor and see how it works?

It may be worth reporting this to Native Instruments themselves.

    Hi Bassman!

The current version of Breakaway for Windows was designed only to grab the audio from applications running in the system, but there will be a power user version at some point in the future which will be able to grab audio from the sound card instead for true input->output realtime processing.

    Hi Jim!

Telephony preset is actually on my to-do list, along with an easy way to switch between presets. It will be in Breakaway 1.03.

I’ve also been planning to make a power-user version of Breakaway at some point, with an 8-band parametric EQ for speaker calibration and equalization, and other advanced features. This EQ could definitely help compensating for hearing loss too. I don’t know exactly when it will be done, but stay tuned 🙂.

I don’t know of a software EQ (other than my own) that can run realtime with low latency.. Since it will be a while before there’s a Breakaway version with EQ, have you thought about using a Hardware EQ? An inexpensive graphic equalizer meant for in-car use would work very well, add no latency, and cost very little – I see several in the $30 price range on eBay.

    Hi Pekkaar!

I’m sorry to hear that. My apologies — we’ve upgraded to a newer version of the licensing software we’re using — there may be an incompatibility. Please e-mail your new hardware ID to the support department – windows_system at claessonedwards dot com, and we will happily generate a new key for you. I apologize for any inconvenience.

    Hi Carlos!

Excellent find. Ever thought about working in Quality Assurance? 🙂

Thank you so much for your help. Not that you’ve shown me where to look, I believe I’ve found the problem!

I went over the kernel streaming code with a fine toothed comb, and I believe I found something.

Can you try the latest version (RC4) with KS in, KS out?

    RC4 will be up soon.

New version will also have DS input available.

    Thanks again!

    Hi Carlos!

Allow me to clarify — the Safe Mode checkbox in the wizard, controls only what audio interface to use for output.. That’s *all* it does — if you’re changing the Interface drop-down in the expert configuration window, whether Safe Mode is on or off, doesn’t matter.

With that out of the way, did you say that using KS for input and Wave for output, still had the dropouts? I’m confused — can you tell me which Input and Output interfaces you were using?
